Nine

Broken

It’d been a good long minute since Jackson Hartmann had woken up entirely sated. It was amazing, waking so rested, especially given the lack of sleep. He glanced over at Hannah. She looked younger when she slept, face relaxed, hair lush against the pillow. And those freckles... He was hard just looking at her.

Against his better judgment, he kissed her on the shoulder and she stirred. “Are you waking me up?” she murmured, eyes still closed. Then she cracked one eyelid, lashes bashing. “Again?” The other eyelid followed suit and both eyebrows rose with an inquisitive arc.

He kissed her shoulder then, grinning officially, set about giving her a hickey.

“How old are you?” She swatted him away.

“Just marking what’s mine.” He bit her on her shoulder, the suction—or rather, the branding—oddly erotic.

“We’re expiration dating,” she reminded him, swatting him again.

“If you think this hickey is going to last more than eight weeks, you’re massively overestimating my abilities.”

She turned and the sheet wrapped around her fell away from her body, offering him a clear view of the luscious curves underneath. “Didn’t feel like I underestimated you very much last night.” She grinned at him.

“Don’t start something you can’t finish,” he teased, immediately regretting the challenge. Didn’t matter how good last night was, or how happy he felt this morning, this was going to finish, in eight weeks minus one day. He’d be damned if he’d make the same mistakes as his dad. He wasn’t going to promise anything to her. Jackson Hartmann wasn’t about to make a single promise he couldn’t keep. Sowing wild oats was in his genetic makeup, and though he was ready to fight his heritage as hard as he could, the niggling voice of self-doubt was ever present to remind him how easy it would be to lose it all. Rolling onto his shoulder, he lifted his hand and trailed it down the curve of Hannah’s rib cage. Surely there were easier ways to start the day than a punishing round of threats from his inner conscience. Yes, reveling in the satin-smooth skin under his fingertips. He swallowed. Better things indeed.

“What I had in mind shouldn’t take that long,” Hannah professed aloud, sleepily.

He felt a hand explore along the edge of his thigh and clenched his jaw, willing himself not to react.

“We gotta meet with the crew. Rodney’s going over our road plan at breakfast.”

The mention of Rodney deflated any feelings of ardor her attentions had provoked. Similarly, she abandoned her endeavor, sitting upright in the bed.

“When?”

“Nine. Only guy I know who insists on meeting on a Sunday morning.”

“I forgot.” A look of panic crossed her face. “The diner, yeah?” She hopped off the bed, clinging to the sheet. The military corners tucked and starched to the bottom of the mattress wouldn’t allow her more than a few steps from the bed. She pinked at the prospect of unveiling her rich curves.

“Nothing I haven’t seen before, Boston,” he assured her, leaning back against the headboard and propping another pillow behind him to better enjoy the show.
